The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) convened a meeting on July 29 to discuss the planning and construction of the Junshan Medical-Engineering Industrial Park.
This new development aims to establish a specialized medical-engineering industrial zone. The park will create a comprehensive "R&D-Clinical-Manufacturing-Application" ecosystem, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and supporting Wuhan's goal of becoming an international hub for medical innovation.
Medical-engineering integration, the convergence of medicine and modern engineering technology, is recognized as a key to overcoming critical challenges in medical technology.
WEDZ has accelerated the development of its modern industrial system, focusing on the health and biotechnology sectors. The zone is home to leading medical institutions such as Tongji Hospital and over 140 health enterprises, including China Resources Pharmaceutical and Hiteck Biopharmaceutical.
In 2024, the health and biotechnology sector generated nearly 45 billion yuan ($6.27 billion) in revenue, laying a solid foundation for further innovation.
The park aims to attract 200 enterprises and achieve 100 innovation transformations within five years, with a total output value of 20 billion yuan. It will also establish alliances for patents, innovation, and investment, fostering a thriving medical-engineering ecosystem.
The park will be developed in three phases, including research incubators and service platforms for design, testing, and manufacturing. It will offer commercial and residential facilities, as well as educational resources to meet the needs of medical-engineering professionals.
