Mulan's hometown transformed into airport zone

In recent years, Wuhan's various districts have been striving to increase the level of opening-up by developing brands with distinctive features. To help our readers better understand this, more effectively tell Wuhan stories to the world, and celebrate the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with practical action, we are launching a series of bilingual reports related to "One District, One Brand." In this report, we take a look at Huangpi District, Mulan's hometown.

Just as Wuhan boasts great rivers and lakes, Huangpi District takes pride in its mountains and waters.

Of all the districts of Wuhan, Huangpi is the largest geographically and has the biggest population. With a registered population of 1.16 million in a territory of 2,261 square kilometers, it accounts for one eighth of the city's population and one fourth of its territory. It serves as an ecological protective barrier in northern Wuhan as it accounts for half of the city's total forest area, one sixth of its water area, and one seventh of its wetlands. Huangpi Districit is the first among all county-level economies in Hubei to attain a GDP of over RMB 100 billion. It is one of the Top 100 Industrial Districts in China and also one of the Top 100 Investment Potential Districts in the country. It hosts a state-level industrial internet demonstration base as well as a key high-quality provincial development area.

District of history and culture

Huangpi's profound humanistic spirit is embodied in four aspects of its culture.

The first is the Panlong culture featuring the Panlong City Site that dates back 3,500 years. The site is one of the "top 100 archaeological discoveries of China in the past 100 years" and acclaimed as the "root of Wuhan, the 'Thoroughfare of Nine Provinces,' and source of Chinese culture in the south."

The second is the Mulan culture as Huangpi is the hometown of Hua Mulan, the famous female warrior.

The third is the culture of the "Double Chengs," Cheng Yi and Cheng Hao, both natives of Huangpi and founders of Neo-Confucianism in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 CE).

The fourth is its business culture which is marked by the fact that many major cities in China have a road called "Huangpi Road," a testimony to the old saying, "Huangpi people are related to every town in one way or another."

Airway and railway center

Huangpi is the home of the largest major airport in Central China — Wuhan Tianhe International Airport — and the biggest railway freight marshalling station in Asia. Adjacent to the largest inland river port in China — Yangluo Port, the area has the longest planned mileage and largest number of rail transit lines in the city, and the highest density of grade roads in the province. With the speed-up of the construction of the third runway of the airport, the construction of the high-speed railway along the Yangtze River, and the operation of the Wuhan-Dawu Expressway very soon, a comprehensive interconnected air, water, road and rail transportation system has taken shape in the district.

New airport zone

The state-level Wuhan Airport Economic Demonstration Zone, with the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport as its core, is 150 square kilometers in size. The construction of the airport is in full swing. Huangpi attaches great importance to three major systems — air transportation, airport high-tech, and modern airport services — and five major areas — science and technology innovation, aviation logistics, the core area around the airport, high-end intelligent manufacturing, and international commerce.

District of innovation

Huangpi, which has successfully held the first China Industrial Internet Identifier Conference, announced "12 Golden Articles" to promote the construction of secondary nodes for industrial internet identifier resolution, and build the first industrial internet industry demonstration park in Hubei. The third local special policy in China of the "Eight Articles" for Information Technology Application Innovation was issued to promote industrial development and to locate the first industrial park in Hubei for such innovation in Huangpi. There are plans to build a Wuhan rail transit industry innovation base so the whole industrial chain will be centered on local production.

Domestic trade center

Hankoubei has a market area of 12.4 million square meters servicing 10 professional market sectors such as furniture, building materials and electronic products, making it the second largest comprehensive commercial market in China. The transaction volume of the 2021 Global Digital Trade Conference & Wuhan (Hankoubei) Commodities Fair reached RMB 402.8 billion, thus reinforcing the pattern of Wuhan Commodities Fairs in the north balanced with Canton Commodities Fairs in the south. The Hankoubei area is now upgrading and building the Wuhan International Trade City into a national commodity market digitalization and intelligent demonstration base and the first domestic market that integrates procurement, cross-border e-commerce and general trade to facilitate the establishment of Wuhan as an international consumption center.

Holiday resort

Huangpi District, having mountains, forests, fields, and lakes that enhance each other’s beauty, is among the first group of national "all-for-one" tourism demonstration zones and has been chosen as "China's Influential ‘All-for-one’ Tourism Demonstration Zone." With four 5A-level scenic spots, eight 4A-level scenic spots and six 3A-level scenic spots, the district boasts the largest number of A-level scenic spots in China and consequently is known as the "Back Garden of Wuhan". On weekends, the Huangpi scenic areas have become a must destination for visitors to Wuhan. The annual influx of 25 million tourists contributes more than RMB 15 billion in revenue to the economy and enables the employment of 360,000 people.
