The exhibition "From Monet to Soulages: Paths of Western Modern Painting (1805-1975)" is slated for the upcoming Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Wuhan Art Museum. It is held to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the French Consulate in Wuhan.
The exhibition's 51 representative artworks of various styles came from France's St Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Besides the well-known artists like Monet, Courbet, Matisse, Picasso, Dubuffet, Soulages, works of artists who were less famous but exerted significant influence on western art were also included. A variety of genres such as classicism, ipressionism, cubism, surrealism, lyricism, geometric abstraction and so on will all gather in Wuhan , jointly depicting the "modern road" of western art from 1800 to 1980.
"The purpose of this exhibition is to offer the best art of France to Chinese friends," said Olivier Guyonvarch, Consul General of France in Wuhan. And according to Didier Kimmoun, cultural attache of the Consulate General of France, the St Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the second largest museum in France, and these works (except Picasso) have never come to China before.
